What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati — “the seven and a half” — is the 7.5-year period when Saturn (Shani) transits through three consecutive zodiac signs around your natal Moon. It begins when Saturn enters the sign before your Moon (the 12th), continues through your Moon's own sign (the 1st), and ends when Saturn leaves the sign after it (the 2nd). Each stage lasts roughly 2.5 years.
Vedic astrology treats it as one of the most demanding periods of life — but classical Jyotisha is also clear that Sade Sati is not a curse. It is a structural rebuild that, used skilfully, leaves the native far more grounded than they were before. Read more in What is Sade Sati?
The three phases
Rising (Aarohini) — Saturn in the 12th from your Moon. The first 2.5 years. Stress around losses, expenses, isolation. Old structures shake.
Peak (Madhya) — Saturn in your Moon's own sign. The middle 2.5 years, traditionally the hardest. Identity, health, intimate relationships all get tested.
Setting (Avarohini) — Saturn in the 2nd from your Moon. The final 2.5 years. Family, finances, speech, possessions, slow rebuilding.
Saturn's other Moon-related transits
Ashtama Shani — Saturn in the 8th from your Moon. About 2.5 years. Transformation, hidden patterns surfacing, sudden change. Less famous than Sade Sati but real, and often harder than people expect.
Kantaka Shani — Saturn in the 4th from your Moon. About 2.5 years. Touches home, mother, emotional foundation, and inner peace. The calculator flags both of these statuses separately so you know what is actually active right now.
How often does Sade Sati happen?
Saturn takes ~29.5 years to complete one full orbit around the zodiac. So each person typically experiences Sade Sati about three times in a normal lifetime — late twenties / early thirties, late fifties / early sixties, and (if they live to it) late eighties. Frequently Asked Questions
What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati is the 7.5-year period when Saturn (Shani) transits through three signs around your natal Moon — the 12th from your Moon (Rising / Aarohini), your Moon's own sign (Peak / Madhya), and the 2nd from your Moon (Setting / Avarohini). Each phase lasts about 2.5 years. In Vedic astrology it is considered one of the most demanding periods of life, but also one of the most growth-producing.
How is Sade Sati calculated?
From your date, time, and place of birth, we identify the zodiac sign your natal Moon was in. Then we compute Saturn's current sign and its movement over time. When Saturn is transiting the 12th, 1st, or 2nd sign from your natal Moon, you are in Sade Sati. The math is precise — same astronomy a professional Vedic astrologer would use.
What are the three phases of Sade Sati?
Rising (Aarohini) is the first 2.5 years, when Saturn is in the 12th from your Moon — usually marked by stress, losses, expenses, and "things winding down." Peak (Madhya) is the middle 2.5 years, when Saturn sits in your Moon sign — the most intense phase, often involving identity, health, or relationship reckonings. Setting (Avarohini) is the final 2.5 years, with Saturn in the 2nd from your Moon — themes of family, finances, and rebuilding speech and resources.
How often does Sade Sati happen?
Saturn takes about 29.5 years to orbit the Sun, so each person experiences Sade Sati roughly three times in a normal lifetime — typically in their late twenties / early thirties, late fifties / early sixties, and (if they live to it) late eighties.
What is Ashtama Shani?
Ashtama Shani is Saturn transiting through the 8th sign from your natal Moon — a "lesser" but still difficult Saturn period lasting about 2.5 years. Themes include transformation, sudden changes, hidden patterns surfacing, and health vulnerabilities. The calculator flags this status separately so you know what's actually active.
What is Kantaka Shani?
Kantaka Shani is Saturn in the 4th sign from your natal Moon — another challenging Saturn position, about 2.5 years. The 4th is the house of home, mother, emotional foundation, and inner peace; Kantaka Shani often touches these. It is less famous than Sade Sati but real.
Is Sade Sati always bad?
No. Sade Sati is demanding, not punitive. Saturn is the planet of structure, reality, and consequences. The period strips away what was never genuinely yours and rewards what you build on real foundations. Many people complete major work, real relationships, and identity shifts during Sade Sati. The honest read: hard, but useful.
How accurate is Yuktai's Sade Sati calculator?
We use astronomy-engine for Saturn's position (sub-arcsecond accuracy) with Lahiri ayanamsa, and search day-by-day for exact sign-transition dates. The result matches what a professional Vedic astrologer would tell you. Note that Saturn retrogrades for ~4.5 months a year, which can cause it to briefly enter and exit a sign; the calculator reports the first sustained entry as the official transition.
